After experiencing back-to-back security breaches, the country down under planned to centralise its cybersecurity efforts by appointing a coordinator.

On February 27, 2023, the Albanese government held a cybersecurity roundtable in response to the country’s ballooning cyberattack cases. The solution brought to the table is establishing a Coordinator for Cyber Security.

The purpose is to provide a centrally coordinated approach to the duties of the government in terms of cyber security. This would entail organising and “triaging” action following a significant incident.

A National Office for Cyber Security under the Home Affairs division will support the incoming coordinator.

Prime Minister Anthony promised to make Australia “the world’s most cyber-secure country by 2030“.

“For businesses these days, cybersecurity is as important and essential as the shop having a lock on the door. We need all Australian businesses to be able to protect themselves and their customers,” Albanese said.

Hence, Minister of Home Affairs and Cybersecurity Claire O’Neil announced the appointment in an early-morning interview on ABC’s AM radio.

“We arrived in government finding a real mess in cybersecurity. What we saw was different parts of government and the private sector doing important things but all rowing in different directions,” she said.

When asked how long it would take to fill the new position, she responded, “We are in the process of advertising for that role, so we are looking at something over the next month.”

In line with the preparation, a discussion paper produced by the advisory board, 2023-2030 Australian Cyber Security Strategy, legal requirements, and standards related to cyberspace that apply to both business and government could be consolidated into a new cybersecurity act.

The research also investigates Australia’s potential to strengthen its current international cyber alliances and its capacity to significantly contribute to the development of global norms for cyber security.
