A mother of four is warning others to be cautious after believing she had purchased a safe and dependable car from Facebook Marketplace, only to discover several days later that it was not what it appeared to be.
Andy Hansen, who lives in Adelaide, spent all her savings buying a 2003 Holden Commodore for $4,000. Later, she discovered the car was not drivable, and its service paperwork was fake.
Two days after Ms Hansen spent all her remaining money on a car advertised as recently serviced with no problems, it broke down. Upon inspection by a mechanic, it was discovered that the car required numerous repairs, including a new engine, leaving Ms Hansen without a car and thousands of dollars out of pocket.
The mother set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds for a family car that she needs to transport her four children to school, two of whom are disabled. She mentioned that she has limited funds to buy a reliable vehicle.
“I recently discovered that the car I invested a lot of money in was purchased from a wrecker as a repairable [write-off]. As a result of trying to maintain the car, my children had to go without a vital need for several months,” she revealed.
She stated that the person she purchased the car provided her with service records and mechanical invoices for a different vehicle identification number. However, she suspects that these documents may be falsified.
The mother living in Adelaide Hills, insisted on getting the vehicle checked by the Royal Automobile Association (RAA) to confirm it was in good condition. Still, she alleged that the seller convinced her not to.
Ms Hansen stated that her inability to access transportation, specifically a car, forced her to resign from her job, leading to considerable strain on both her and her family.
The distraught Ms Hansen has filed a report against the Facebook seller with the police. The South Australia Police have confirmed the incident and are investigating.
