An underaged hacker is causing turmoil in two big companies by breaching their internal computer systems.

On Thursday night, the City of London Police announced the arrest of a 17-year-old male charged with multiple counts of computer abuse and bail violations. The youth is suspected of being involved in high-profile breaches at Rockstar Games and ride-hailing giant Uber.

The FBI undertook a dual investigation into this matter, which took them to the United Kingdom. In this case, they’ve collaborated with the National Cyber Crime Unit (NCCU). Police will only confirm that the suspect was taken into custody and declined to divulge further information regarding the arrest and investigation.

The hacking has compromised many internal systems. Rockstar Games and Uber have speculated that the same person caused the network intrusion. The Uber incident occurred through an employee’s Slack login, first reported by the New York Times. After that, he sent this message to Uber employees: “I announce I am a hacker, and Uber has suffered a data breach.”

On the other hand, Rockstar Games announced on the 19th of September 2022 that 90 videos of their GTA 6 game development were illegally accessed. The footage was leaked through GTAForums and social media.

The intrusions are alleged to be committed by the Lapsus$ hacking group, which used the moniker “teapotuberhacker.”

“We recently suffered a network intrusion in which an unauthorised third party illegally accessed and downloaded confidential information from our systems, including early development footage for the next Grand Theft Auto,” said Rockstar.

The teen’s identity is still unknown and probably won’t be for several months, but the most recent charges are thought to be connected to earlier ones made by the City of London Police in March. Seven people between the ages of 16 and 21 were detained on suspicion of having ties to the Lapsus$ hacking group. Earlier this year, Okta, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Samsung breaches were attributed to Lapsus$.
