The American video game publisher admitted that it fell victim to network intrusion leading to premature and malicious data release.

Rockstar Games, publisher of the famous video game Grand Theft Auto, posted on Twitte, that they suffer from third-party unauthorised and illegal access. The intruder downloaded some confidential data, including the early footage of Grand Theft Auto’s development.

About 90 videos of gaming segments are included in the data collection. The data was leaked by a user named “teapotuberhacker” over the weekend via GTAForums and social media. Later, it was discovered that the same user was responsible for the breach of Uber’s internal computer systems.

The FBI conducted a dual investigation on this issue, leading them to the U.K. The City of London Police posted on the evening of Thursday that a 17-year-old in Oxfordshire has been arrested on suspicion of hacking. They have partnered with the National Cyber Crime Unit (NCCU) on this case.

It was believed that Teapot, the underaged hacker, the primary purpose for illegally accessing and leaking the footage, was money. Teapot wanted to negotiate a deal with Rockstar Games. Their message on 4chan, an imageboard website used by primarily young male users, goes this way: “I will leak more if Rockstar/Take2 doesn’t pay me”.

Rockstar ensured their gamers for undisrupted project development.

“At this time, we do not anticipate any disruption to our live game services nor any long-term effect on the development of our ongoing projects. We are extremely disappointed to have any details of our next game shared with you all this way. Our work on the next Grand Theft Auto game will continue as planned, and we remain as committed as ever….”

After they posted the message on Twitter, many games showed their different reactions. Some were disappointed, and others sympathised with the web developers who worked hard to complete the game.
