A new study from Gurucul and Cybersecurity Insiders revealed that over half of organisations had experienced an insider threat incident in the last 12 months.
Insider threats are a significant issue at organisations of all sizes, according to the results of the firms’ annual 2023 Insider Threat Report, which draws on responses from more than 325 cybersecurity professionals.
“While it shows that 86 per cent are using some sort of solution to monitor user behaviour in some way, it was surprising to see that access logging was the primary method and that only 25 per cent are using automated tools to monitor user behaviour 24×7,” Gurucul CEO Saryu Nayyar said.
“The types of monitoring and analytics used to detect insider threats vary widely between organisations. This highlights the need for better tools and processes to analyse data behaviour, user behaviour, access, and movement across a network both internally and externally to detect and prevent insider attacks.”
The study highlights the most recent trends and challenges organisations encounter as they try to adapt to changing insider threats and how organisations are getting ready to protect sensitive data and IT infrastructure better.
According to the survey, organisations have never felt more exposed, with 75 per cent of respondents indicating they are moderately to extremely vulnerable to insider threats, up 8 per cent from the previous year.
The number of insider attacks has significantly increased, with 74 per cent of organisations reporting an increase in attack frequency (up 6 per cent from last year), 60 per cent reporting at least one attack, and 25 per cent reporting more than six attacks. These trends in perceived vulnerability and insider attack frequency are closely related.
More than 50 per cent of respondents claimed that detecting insider threats in the cloud is more complicated and that the uptime and effectiveness of tools like SASE and CASB are essential to success.
Ultimately, organisations must remain vigilant and take all necessary steps to prevent insider threats.
