The recent report from LogRhythm highlights supply chain attacks as one of the most worrisome threats to enterprises in the Asia Pacific region.

According to Kevin Kirkwood, Deputy CISO, organisations in the Asia-Pacific region are leading the way in adopting open-source software, having seen the pandemic’s most significant growth rates.

“With the region’s high reliance on open-source software, organisations are likely to be perceived as prime targets to cyber threats from supply chains,” Kirkwood said.

“In 2023, we will see bad actors attack APACs vulnerabilities in low-hanging open-source vendors to compromise the global supply chain that utilises third-party code.”

Companies using open-source software are particularly vulnerable due to their reliance on third-party providers and potential security gaps along the distribution chain.

These attacks can be incredibly damaging, with hackers able to access sensitive data or disrupt operations.

According to Eric Hart, Manager of Subscription Services at LogRhythm, more businesses may consider investing in employee training initiatives to better detect risks due to the surge in social engineering assaults against companies over the previous year.

“2022 has seen some big names, the likes of Microsoft, Cisco, and Uber, suffer breaches by multi-factor authentication (MFA) fatigue, phishing, and other social engineering tactics,” Hart said.

To improve the ASEAN region’s connectivity and boost the region’s digital trade ecosystem, the US Department of Commerce will collaborate with the ASEAN Consultative Committee on Standards and Quality (ACCSQ) to co-develop programs on digital trust and cybersecurity standards.

A new standard for AI security has been developed by a research team from Nanyang Technological University Singapore and leaders in the AI sector to help manage and minimise risk. This was done to secure the integrity of AI programs and increase public confidence in AI solutions.

Making these changes now will help to ensure that companies in the APAC region are better prepared for the security threats they may face in 2023.
