The State Revenue Office of Victoria (SRO) has announced that it was recently the target of a cyber attack, resulting in unauthorised access to its system.

The hacking incident comes after a slew of data breaches and intrusions at significant Australian businesses in recent months, most notably those at telecommunications company Optus and insurer Medibank. TPG Telecom also made known this week that someone had accessed email systems illegally to snoop around for cryptocurrency user data.

The department said it experienced a “cyber incident involving a third-party provider” where the hacking group attempted to sell the state’s taxation system data online but provided the assurance that “no customer data is involved” in the breach.

According to the department, the hacking group is attempting to sell the

state’s taxation system data online.

The Albanese administration has created a seven-year cybersecurity policy under the direction of former Telstra CEO Andy Penn in response to the recent spate of data leaks and hacking.

Last week, Mr Penn claimed that a rising trend was developing in which nation-states were detecting system faults and disclosing the knowledge to criminals on the dark web.

“Companies often use ubiquitous programs and applications made by big software providers … nation-sponsored actors will identify the weaknesses in these programs and post it to the dark web for cybercriminals to exploit,” he said.

Meanwhile, the government’s cyber incident response service was looking into the SRO’s claim that a hacker had gained access to a development copy of its website through a third-party service provider.

According to screenshots from Breached forum, hacking group KelvinSecurity is attempting to sell a gigabyte of data that it claims to have stolen from the SRO.

The post was initially seen by Shield Corporate Security’s managing director, Zac Dromi, who noted that the sample data appeared to include government email addresses.

Data privacy is a big concern for many people. The recent data breach at the State Revenue Office of Victoria has demonstrated how vulnerable we are to hackers and other cyber-criminals.
