WhatsApp creators have warned billions of iPhone and Android users to ensure they have downloaded and installed the authentic app due to the issue with the well-known messaging app clones.

According to The Sun, WhatsApp issued a warning: “Unofficial WhatsApp apps are changed versions of our app, which means they were created by third parties and violate our Terms of Service.”

“We don’t support these apps because they risk your privacy, security, and safety.”

“If you use them, there’s no guarantee your messages or data, like your location or the files you share, will be private and secure.”

According to the app’s support staff, when using one of the clone versions of the chat platform, you cannot guarantee that your messages are secure.

Additionally, using fake versions is against WhatsApp’s terms of service, which could prevent you from accessing the actual app.

Whatsapp has warned users to avoid at least two modified software versions, Whatsapp Plus and GB Whatsapp because they both include malware.

Essentially, these apps are cloning the basic structure and design of WhatsApp to trick users into downloading them. They then use this to gain access to the user’s mobile data and other personal information. This can be very dangerous, as it could allow criminals or even hackers to read your messages without your knowledge.

Requests for membership fees—the actual WhatsApp app does not require a subscription—or the inclusion of adverts are possible red flags that you are using a fake version of the service.

Although Google is expected to alert Android users when they unintentionally download fake copies of WhatsApp, it’s still not enough to protect the public from being victims.

The best course of action for users is to stick with the officially branded versions of these apps instead of any imitations. The real WhatsApp app is free on the App Store and Google Play, so there’s no need to deal with any potential security risks.
