The human cost of Australia’s ransomware attacks has soared, with the latest research showing that the number of people affected has more than doubled in the past year.

According to the latest research, the number of people affected has more than doubled in the past year. The report also indicates that businesses are facing increasing costs from these attacks, with 20% of organisations saying the cost of an attack has reached between $50,000 and $100,000.

“Compounded by Australia’s cyber skills shortage and the number of cyber-attacks occurring on our shores, it’s no wonder cybersecurity professionals are facing increasing stress and burnout,” said APAC Chief CTO at Mimecast, Garrett O’Hara.

The 2022 survey found that 40% of organisations are experiencing significant downtime because of ransomware attacks, up from 33% last year. This is a concerning trend, as ransomware attacks can significantly negatively impact businesses.

The prevailing scenario paints a grim picture for the future of cybersecurity, with many professionals considering leaving their roles due to stress or burnout. With ransomware attacks becoming more common and costly, it’s no wonder that professionals are feeling overwhelmed.

A global organisation named Cybermindz.org is working to improve the mental health of cyber professionals. The company’s founder Peter Coroneos says the numbers are telling and that more needs to be done to support these workers.

“The human cost of ransomware is growing, as is the cost of other cyber threats. Yet we continue to see a serious shortfall in the number of cyber professionals available to defend our organisations. This is not only a national but an international problem that requires an international solution,” said Mr Coroneos.

Cybermindz.org aims to fill this gap by providing resources and support to cyber professionals worldwide. The company offers online courses, webinars, podcasts, and other resources. Cybermindz also provides a forum where professionals can connect and share their experiences.
