Ride-hailing giant Uber says it’s investigating a potential breach of its computer systems.

Uber announced via tweet that they are responding to a cybersecurity incident that had taken several of its internal communications and engineering systems offline as it looked into the matter.

Uber has not yet released further updates about the breach. Still, it is believed that the culprit was an 18-year-old teenager who social-engineered one of its employees and used that person’s password to gain access to the internal network.

According to reports, the breach may have compromised many of Uber’s internal systems. A person claiming responsibility for the hack has reportedly sent images of the email, cloud storage, and code repositories to cybersecurity researchers and The New York Times.

In this case, the hacker could gain access to Uber’s systems by tricking an employee into giving up their login credentials. This type of attack, known as “social engineering,” relies on manipulation and deception rather than technical prowess.

“It appeared that the hacker was later able to gain access to other internal systems, posting an explicit photo on an internal information page for employees,” the New York Times said.

The company is in touch with law enforcement authorities about the incident, but it’s unclear how many users may have been affected by the breach.

Uber has struggled to regain the trust of riders and drivers after a series of scandals battered its reputation.

The incident highlights the vulnerability of even the most well-protected computer systems to hackers who can exploit the human factor.
